Welcome to the 'Traces of ancient celestial' route, a unique journey through Urbino that begins in the historic heart of the city, in the Guado Urbino laboratory. Here, Alessandra Ubaldi will introduce you to the fascinating history of woad, once a precious pigment of the Duchy of Urbino.

2. The celestial magic of the ford, in short

Woad is a natural pigment extracted from Isatis tinctoria, historically used in Europe to dye fabrics and yarns. For six thousand years, humanity has used plants for dyeing, a magical practice that was lost with the advent of artificial colors just over a century ago. The ford, with its rich history, symbolism, and links to agriculture, art and customs, invites us to rediscover and enhance ancient traditions.  

3. A journey through the city, through time, through colour...

Alessandra will guide you to discover how woad has colored not only fabrics but also the cultural history of our city and the ancient duchy. You will learn about the historical legacy of the color, the botanical properties of Isatis tinctoria and its applications in dyeing, a technique that awakens a forgotten heritage.
